Why We Stopped Chasing Therapy (and What Actually Helped My Son Speak)

Ten years ago, if you had told me that food could do what therapy couldn’t—I wouldn’t have believed you.


Experts told me my son would need noise-canceling headphones to get through daily life. That he’d never handle a birthday party. That his fear of hair clippers, fireworks, and other kids was just “his autism.” Full stop.


But here’s what they didn’t tell me:

That sensory issues are often a symptom of an overwhelmed, undernourished brain.

That picky eating is a detox issue, not a personality trait.

And that the brain can absolutely rebuild—when it finally gets what it needs.

My son was non-speaking until he was nearly six.

No words. No eye contact. No connection.

  • And we—my son and I—co-regulated our nervous systems back to life.


By seven and a half, my son was discharged from care.

Today, he’s 15. He has friends. He’s thriving in a mainstream high school.

He leads D&D campaigns and plays sports that require spatial awareness—something he once had none of.

The old belief that food has nothing to do with autism?

It’s not just outdated—it’s harmful.

Here’s what lifestyle medicine taught me (and what I now teach families around the world):
